The purpose of this project is to promote volunteerism among seniors. It is based on the value and philosophy that recognizes the strengths of our seniors and leveraging these assets to support other members in the community.
Being a senior of the Chinese minority community in Calgary, many of whom are new immigrants and from low-income families, they have limited English skills and as a result, limited ability to fully connect to the community and obtain the resources and services available to them. This situation is further hampered by the fact that many of these community resources and services are provided and relied more and more on digital means – on Internet webpages and smartphone/tablet applications (e.g. The City of Calgary website and its phone apps), which many senior members found difficult to access and operate. This program aims to provide trainings to a group of seniors and assist them to understand and gain knowledge on the operation of one of the widely used digital device (e.g. the iPad), so that they can have the ability to independently operate the device to gain access to the many available community resources on the digital world. In becoming our senior digital ambassadors upon finishing the tablet training, they will engage into the society to share their skills and knowledge with other members of the society, starting from their spouse and close relatives, to their friends and assisting other community members.
Ultimately, the main object of this program is to encourage and support social participation and the inclusion of seniors into the City of Calgary through cultivating a group of capable and confident senior volunteers. We aim to equip them with the knowledge, skill, and confidence to become independent leaders so that they can share their knowledge to other senior members of the Chinese community.
